The non-technical leaders who stand out now bring something additional: genuine curiosity and enough technical comfort to find and build leverage for themselves and their teams. Not to become engineers. To see where the opportunity is and be willing to go act on it.
That combination – agency plus curiosity plus technical ease – is what unlocks the tools. And the tools are worth unlocking.
Building something tailored to how a specific team works is now fast and cheap enough to actually do. That matters because fit is what makes leverage real. For most of the SaaS era, operators had two options: buy software built around someone else's assumptions, or wait for internal engineering resources. The first meant constant workarounds. The second meant prioritization battles. Either way, the leverage was blunt.
What's collapsed is the cost and time required to build something with actual contextual depth. Tools shaped around the nuances of how a team operates, what the real friction is, what a generic process would flatten. That knowledge always lived with operators. Now the ones with the right DNA can act on it directly.
I've watched this in our portfolio. One company built a virtual SDR, not a vendor product but an internal system that is shaped around their specific sales motion. The prep reflects what their reps actually need. The follow-up fits how that team works. The ops tasks that used to absorb rep time run on their own. It works because someone had the curiosity to see the opportunity and the technical comfort to build it with the contextual depth only an insider has.
Reps can now focus on relationships. CAC compresses. The system gets used because it fits.
The unlock isn't just cheap, fast tooling. It's operators who have the instinct to find where leverage lives and the comfort to go build it. Those operators will pull ahead. Not because they have more agency than their peers, but because they can translate that agency into something real.
For founders building early teams, this shifts what to look for. The agency bar hasn't moved. But curiosity and technical comfort are now worth probing explicitly. They're not nice to have. They're the new baseline.
